Most tourists and travelers to Shillong arrive either by railroads to Guwahati or by air to either Guwahati or directly to Umroi airport in Shillong. One reason why the majority of travelers arrive in Guwahati and not directly to Umroi airport in Shillong is because the airport in Umroi remains mostly closed due to prevalent bad weather conditions and thus a lot of flights scheduled to touch down on Umroi keep getting cancelled throughout.
Therefore, most tourists come via Guwahati in Assam to Shillong to avoid any such sudden bad weather cancellations.
Shillong, lying in the north east part of the country, lacks on public transport infrastructure. Though there is a small airport at Umroi in Shillong that is around 35 km from Shillong, the airport stays closed most of the time due to bad weather prevalent in the area, thus most flights are cancelled.
If you wish to come by air, then Guwahati airport also known as Gopinath Bordoloi Airport in Guwahati would be a better choice for tourists as it is just 128 km away from Shillong, Meghalaya. This airport at Guwahati is connected to the rest of the country with regular flights and has a lot of options unlike the Umroi airport in Shillong.
The nearest railway station to Shillong would be the railway station at Guwahati. It is situated on the banks of the river Brahmaputra and serves as an entry point for most tourists coming to Shillong and Meghalaya.
Guwahati in Assam is a place bustling with activities. Though from the infrastructure point of view the city is not all that impressive, still it has its own sweet charm and flavor.
Once in Guwahati, tourists can search for share taxis or private taxis in the vicinity which will take them to Shillong in Meghalaya. It is approximately a 4 hours ride from Guwahati in Assam to Shillong in Meghalaya.
