Arunachal Pradesh also known fondly as “the land of dawn-lit mountains” is the northeastern-most state of India sharing a large part of its border with China. The Land of the Dawn-Lit Mountains is the sobriquet for the state in Sanskrit and it is also known as the Orchid State of India or the Paradise of the Botanists. Geographically, it is the largest of the Seven Sister States of Northeast India.

1. Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary
Established in 1980 and covering an area of about 282 sq km, this beautiful wildlife sanctuary is home to the rare Hoolock Gibbons which are a type of monkey species known for their intelligence. Mehao wildlife sanctuary is sorrounded by beautiful rivers, echoing valleys, evergreen forests and several trekking routes. This sanctuary is located in the Lower Dibang Valley district and is home to animals like Bengal tiger, cloud leopard and Asiatic wild dog. Hence, you need to be careful while choosing your camping site. It is advisable to take the help of locals or a guide once you reach Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary.

2. Pakke Tiger Reserve
Pakke Tiger Reserve, also known as Pakhui Tiger Reserve, is a Project Tiger reserve in the East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. The reserve spreads over an area of 862 km2 and is protected by the Department of Environment and Forest of Arunachal Pradesh. This Tiger Reserve has won India Biodiversity Award 2016 in the category of ‘Conservation of threatened species’ for its Hornbill Nest Adoption Programme.

Notable mammals seen in these Tiger Reserve are the tiger, leopard, clouded leopard, jungle cat, wild dog, jackal, Himalayan black bear, binturong, elephant, gaur, sambar, hog deer, barking deer, wild boar, yellow-throated marten, Malayan giant squirrel, flying squirrel, squirrel, capped langur, rhesus macaque, Assamese macaque, gaur.

3. Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary
The Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1989, is rich in its diversity of flora and fauna. The sanctuary is situated in the Lohit District of the northeastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh and named after the Kamlang River which flows through the place. The Mishmi, Digaru, and Mizo tribal people who reside around the periphery of the sanctuary claim their descent from the King Rukmo of the epic Mahabharata. They believe in a myth of an invisible god known as Suto Phenkhenynon jamalu. An important body of water in the sanctuary is the Glow Lake. Located in tropical and sub-tropical climatic zones, the sanctuary is the habitat of the four big cat species of India: tiger, leopard, clouded leopard and snow leopard.

4. Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary
The Talley Valley wildlife sanctuary is famous as a bio-diversity hotspot and is located at a distance of about 32 kms from Ziro in Arunachal Pradesh and towards the north east. One can mostly find sub-tropical and alpine forests in this place and it has a variety of endangered flora and faunas. The place offers great trekking opportunities for travelrs with a flair for trekking related activities. The Talley Valley Reserved Forest and Talle Wildlife sanctuary is home to highly endangered species of animals such as the rare clouded leopard. Also Pleioblastus simone is a bamboo variety only found in in this Talley Valley.
